As America commemorates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, it is fitting to recall that Dr. King’s Christian faith inspired his public advocacy for civil rights.
Dr. King famously proclaimed that “darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Dr. King confronted the darkness in sin in his generation, which took the form of racial injustice—and his witness helped to transform society for the better because his vision of justice was rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ.
As we reflect on his witness, may we renew our commitment to non-violent advocacy for justice, a spirit of love that overcomes division, and a desire for all to know our Lord, the light who conquers the darkness.
