January is Poverty Awareness Month, and we must do our part to heighten awareness to those in need. As we enjoy that new sweater or pair of shoes we received over the holidays, we should allow this month to help us recognize those who will continue to be in search of food, warmth and clothing. Most recent statistics report that over 37 million U.S. residents are living in poverty, and the official poverty rate stands at 11.4 percent. Friends, this is far too many. As Pope Francis reminds us: “The poor do not need intermediaries, but the personal involvement of all those who hear their cry.” Therefore, may we challenge ourselves, during this month and throughout the year, to do as Sacred Scripture instructs us: to “stretch forth your hand to the poor.”
